It was more than a normal half marathon, this race could be called a
climbing race in the woods, alternating stretches from the sea on sand
or pebbles during the distance of 21 km. This fact explains the 3 hours
and 22 minutes it took me to get to the finish line. Maybe it wasn’t
best choice to participate in a race like that after several months with
little training because of the knee that was painful but, in any case,
given the numerous withdrawals and late arrivals after over 4 hours and
30 I must say that I didn’t do badly. The inscriptions were limited (no
more than 200 participants) in order to monitor better every single
athlete as it was easy to get injured, or get lost in the woods, but
every 2 or 3 km there were people who controlled the race and jotted
down the numbers to be sure everybody finished the race. As said, the
great difficulty was based on the tough climbs into the trees and the
narrow paths that forced the runners to walk the path one after another,
in addition to the steep descents but in many cases equipped with ropes
to rappel down without getting hurt. After the first 7 km uphill I
thought I finally could run downhill or at least in the plains to the
finish, but I was too optimistic, in fact after a few miles down the
climb began again in the midst of another wood and then the last km
alternating running across the beach, where there were also swimmers,
and some little rise but manageable. Luckily I have walked the last hour
of the race with a sociable Greek runner who spoke English and we
encouraged one another until a couple of miles from the end when,
spending the last bit of energy, I was able to accelerate. Pasta party
was not a nice thing for me, but the organization of the race was
perfect, all in all it was a great experience that must be tried once
... but only once.
